Weimaraner

If you watch Sesame Street you might recognize this dog. They are often used in skits dressed up in human clothes. The Weimaraner is an affectionate, cheerful rambunctious dog. They need to be given lots of attention and companionship. If left alone too much they can become destructive. They are great with children though because of their high energy can accidentally knock down a small child.

They can do okay in an apartment if given plenty of opportunities to run. Males will stand 24-27 inches and weigh 55-70 pounds. Females will stand 22-25 inches and weigh 50-65 pounds. Their shorthaired coat is easy to groom, brush occasionally and shampoo only when needed.

Welsh Springer Spaniel

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a happy dog yet not as outgoing as the English Spaniel. They are great with children and other pets in the home. They love to be included in all family activities. They will do fine in an apartment given they have plenty of exercise on and off the leash. Without plenty of exercise they will become overweight. Males are 17-19 inches in height and weigh 40-45 pounds. Females are 16-18 inches and weigh 35-45 pounds. Brush their coat regularly and shampoo only when needed.

The Welsh Terrier was developed in Wales to hunt otter, fox and badger. They are active, intelligent and affectionate. Loving, loyal and patient with children. They like to swim and dig and might be difficult to housebreak. Both genders will stand around 15 inches in height and weigh 20-21 pounds. Unless this dog is very well trained they should not be allowed off their leash in an unsecured area. They will do fine an apartment if exercised sufficiently. Their coat will need to be plucked two or more times a year and brushed weekly.

West Highland White Terrier

This terrier is a Cairn terrier only with a white coat. The Westie is easy to train and will get along with well-behaved children. They may snap when they become annoyed or irritated. They are very active indoors and will do okay in an apartment or without a yard. Males will stand 10-12 inches and weigh 15-22 pounds. Females will stand 9-11 inches and weigh 13-16 pounds. Brush their coat regularly and bathe only when needed.

The Whippet is sweet, docile, and affectionate and will be calm in your home. They get along well with children as long as they don’t rough house or tease the dog. They are good with other dogs but given the opportunity they will hunt and kill cats and smaller animals. The Whippet is an amazingly fast sprinter and has exceptional agility.

Males will stand 19 inches and weigh 18-28 pounds. Females will stand 17 inches and weigh 12-20 pounds. They are sensitive to the cold and should have a sweater on during the winter months. Whippets can live in an apartment or home with a small yard as long as regular chances to run free in a secured area. Rub their coat down with a damp cloth to keep it clean, brush with a wire brush when needed and bathe when necessary.

Wire Fox Terrier

This terrier is playful and energetic. They will be playful with children but have been known to bite. They will be affectionate with their family but can show jealousy at times. If not given enough exercise and attention they can become destructive. The Wire Fox Terrier is more aggressive then the other terriers, they will pick fights with other dogs. They will also hunt and possibly kill smaller animals.

If you have a small yard they will get plenty of exercise by themselves just by running around in it. If you live in an apartment they will need a daily brisk walk. Males will stand 14-16 inches and weigh 15-20 pounds. Females will stand 13-15 inches and weigh 13-18 pounds. Brush and bathe this dog only when needed.

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a rare breed. About 75-150 puppies are born in the US per year. This is an excellent field dog, energetic and loving. They are excellent hunting companions that were bred to hunt quail and hare. They will also make a wonderful family pet. They are gentle and affectionate with children.

This is not a dog for an apartment; they should have at least a large sized yard. Plenty of exercise will keep them happy and calm. They make great jogging companions and love to swim. Both genders will stand 20-24 inches and weigh 50-60 pounds. Brush their coats twice a week and have them professionally groomed two times a year.
