Saint Bernard

The Saint Bernard gained popularity as a rescue dog because of its keen sense of smell. They can smell a person under many feet of snow. They will lick the injured person and lie next to them to keep them warm while one dog goes back to the Hospice to get a full rescue team. The Saint Bernard is extremely gentle and very tolerant with children. This large dog will weigh between 110-200 pounds and standing 25-27 inches. They can live in an apartment if given plenty of exercise. Long daily walks will be sufficient. The St. Bernard can either have a longhaired coat or a shorthaired coat. Both coats are easy to care for. Comb and brush weekly and bathe only when needed.

 

Saluki

The Saluki is a gentle, sensitive and affectionate dog. They can become very attached to one person. The Saluki has a very strong instinct to hunt non-canine animals. If you have small animals like rabbits, hamsters or birds in your home you might not want this dog as your pet. They do best with older considerate children. This is not a dog to have in an apartment. They need a very large yard. They make excellent jogging companions but should always be kept on a leash while in an unsecured area. Both sexes will be between 23-28 inches and weigh 29-66 pounds. Their coat is easy to groom, just brush occasionally.

The Samoyed was named after a group of hunters and fisherman, called the Samoyed, which lived in Siberia . This dog was used to pull their sleds. Today’s Samoyed is gentle and a devoted dog. They are very friendly, even with strangers. This is not a watchdog or guard dog. They get along great with children and will love everyone in their family but will become very attached to just one person.

They can live in an apartment as long as they get plenty of exercise. The males will be 21-23 ½ inches and weigh 45-65 pounds. Females will be 19-21 inches and weigh 35-50 pounds. Their coat needs to be brushed often and they are heavy seasonal shedders.

Schipperke

The Schipperke was used in Belgium to guard canal barges. This dog is a small breed without a tail. They are great dogs to take with you on a sailing or fishing trip. They are smart, energetic little dogs, which despite of their size will make a good guard dog. The Schipperke will be devoted to their family, but will bond more closely with their master. They get along well with children.

Both sexes will stand 10-13 inches and weigh 12-18 pounds. They are great for apartments and will get plenty of exercise by playing indoors. The Schipperke will groom itself. Regular brushing will help reduce the shedding. Females will blow their coat about three times a year. When this happens all the undercoat hair will fall out within a ten-day period. For 2-3 months this dog will look very naked.

Scottish Deerhound

The Scottish Deerhound was once extremely popular with the Scottish nobility and was called the “royal dog of Scotland .” The Deerhound is gentle, loving, friendly and loyal. They get along great with children and will be a devoted dog. They are not recommended for an apartment, but can live in one as long as sufficient exercise is given. They make great running companions but should never be allowed of the leash. The Deerhound is very fast and loves a good chase. Both sexes will be 28-32 inches in height and weigh 75-110 pounds. Brush the coat regularly.

Scottish Terrier

More commonly referred to as the Scottie, this little dog is very lovable. They are good with children and will make a very good watchdog. They love long walks and a good game of fetch. The Scottie is good for an apartment but would be happier with a yard to run in. Males and females will stand 10-11 inches and weigh 19-23 pounds. Their coat should be professionally groomed twice a year. Regular brushing is important in between the grooming periods.

Sealyham Terrier

This little terrier is brave, loving, loyal and affectionate. The Sealyham is a “pack” dog and love being a key part of the family. They are good at catching mice and rats and make a good watchdog. Sealyhams will be no more then 12 inches and should not weigh more then 20 pounds. They are great pets for an apartment. A short walk is plenty of exercise for them. Professional grooming is required on this dog.

Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie is a very gentle dog. Their temperament is delightful and they make excellent companions. This breed is thought to be one of the most intelligent dogs. They get along well with children but will cautious with them. The Sheltie loves to chase things; they should never be let of their leash in an unsecured area.

They will do fine in an apartment but will be happier in a home with a large yard. The Sheltie needs lots of exercise. They make good running buddies as long as they are kept on a leash. Males will be 13-15 inches and weigh 14-18 pounds. Females will be 12-14 inches and weigh 12-16 pounds.

Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is Japans most popular breed of dog. They are independent yet affectionate dogs. The Shiba is great around children but should be watched if smaller animals are in the home. Cats and larger birds will be fine but small birds and rodents might not be so lucky. This dog has been said to be very easy to housebreak.

They will do fine in an apartment as long as they are taken out for a daily walk. Their coat needs occasional brushing and should be bathed only when necessary. Males will be 14-16 inches and weigh 20-30 pounds. Females will be 13-15 pounds and weigh 18-28 pounds.

Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is a very happy little dog. They are very affectionate and love to be around people. They have a tendency to bark a lot and are difficult to housebreak. The Shih Tzu is good with children and other pets in the home. Both sexes will be around 11 inches in height and weigh between 9-16 pounds. They are great for apartments or homes with little or no yard. Indoor play is plenty of exercise for them, but a daily walk is a good idea. Their coat should be brushed daily if the hair is kept long. To avoid daily brushing some owners have chosen to keep the coat short.

Siberian Husky

This breed originated in Siberia but was used mainly in Alaska to pull sleds and herd reindeer. The breed became popular in 1925 when there was a diphtheria outbreak in Nome, Alaska. The Husky was used to transport the medicine to the city. They are gentle and loving dogs that are good with children and friendly with strangers. The Husky wouldn’t make a good watchdog. They don’t like being left alone and can get bored very easily if you are thinking about getting this dog then you should consider buying more then one. If you live in a warm to hot climate this dog might not be a wise choice for you. Their coat is very heavy so they prefer to be an in cool to cold climate.

They can do okay in an apartment but should really be in a home with a large yard. Their coat needs minimal grooming with the exception of twice a year when they shed the heaviest. When shedding occurs daily brushing is helpful. Males will stand 21-23 ½ inches and weigh 45-60 pounds. Females will stand 20-22 inches and weigh 35-50 pounds.

Silky Terrier

The Silky is a loving, spunky and affectionate dog. They will be very close to their master but don’t expect them to be a mellow lap dog. They are full of energy and are curious about everything. The Silky will do well with children but can nip and bite if provoked or roughhoused. They are great dogs to have if you live in an apartment and they will do fine without a yard. Indoor play is plenty of exercise for them. Both sexes will stand 9-10 inches and weigh 8-11 pounds. Their long coat needs to be brushed daily to prevent tangles and matting.

Skye Terrier

The Skye Terrier is an affectionate good-natured dog. They are loving and playful and need lots of attention. Be careful if smaller animals are in the home, the Skye Terrier likes to chase and hunt. Ten inches is the average height for the males and females. Males will weigh 25 pounds and females will weigh slightly less. This little dog will do well in an apartment or without a yard. Indoor play is plenty of exercise. Their long coat should be brushed daily to prevent matting.

Smooth Fox Terrier

The Smooth Fox Terrier can make a good family pet as long as they are properly trained. Good training will make all the difference in this dog. They can be impulsive and without plenty of exercise and attention they will become destructive. This terrier is good with children but has been known to bite. They should not be let of the leash in unsecured area, the hunting instinct in them is very strong and they might take off after a smaller animal.

If exercised sufficiently they will do fine in an apartment. Daily walks and an occasional frolic in the park will make them happy. Males will be 14-16 inches and weigh 15-20 pounds. Females will be 13-15 inches and weigh 13-18 pounds. Grooming is easy, brush and bathe only when needed.

Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier

The Wheaton Terrier originated in Ireland and was used as a farm dog, herder and hunter of vermin and small game. They are happy, friendly and playful. They are loving with children and will bond very closely with their family. The Wheaton Terriers do not get along with cats. A sudden and fast movement will send their instincts in overdrive and they will attack the cat.

A yard is not needed for this dog. They will do well in an apartment as long as they get plenty of playtime. Males will be 18-20 inches in height and weigh around 35-45 pounds. Females will be 17-19 inches and weigh between 30-40 pounds. Brushing their soft coat will make it fuzzy, combing the coat is recommended.

Spinone Italiano

The Spinone Italiano is an intelligent, happy and easy going dog. They are good with children they know and those they don’t. This dog loves to be part of the family and will get along well with other animals in the home.

Both genders will be between 22 ½ -27 ½ inches and weight 61-85 pounds. The Spinone Italiano is not a dog for an apartment. They need a large yard that is securely fenced in. This dog is a digger and has been known to be a high jumper, so make sure the fence is properly footed and high. They make good jogging and walking companions. Weekly brushing of the coat and occasional stripping of dead hairs is all the grooming the coat needs.

 

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was named after the region it was developed in. Staffordshire, England. The Staffordshire is a very energetic dog, they love to play and work. They are very affectionate and are great with children and will do well with other animals in the home. They have very powerful jaws, even as puppies, and can tear apart a toy in a matter of minutes. They can also be difficult to housebreak.

The Staffordshire will do well in an apartment or with a small yard. Indoor play is sufficient exercise for them, but if taken outdoors in an unsecured area they should always be on a leash. Males will weigh 25-38 pounds and stand 14-16 inches. Females will weigh 25-35 pounds and stand 13-15 inches. Brush the coat daily and bathe only when needed.

 

Standard Schnauzer

The Standard Schnauzer is thought to be the oldest of the schnauzer breeds. This schnauzer is a very protective dog, making for a good watch and guard dog. They are intelligent, high-spirited and need lots of companionship.

The Standard Schnauzer is a good dog for apartments or a home with a small yard. Indoor play will give them plenty of exercise but they should also be taken out for a brisk walk daily. Males will be 18-20 inches in height and weigh 30-45 pounds. Females will be17-19 inches and weigh 20-30 pounds. They have a wiry coat; the undercoat will become matted unless brushed daily.

Sussex Spaniel

The Sussex Spaniel is a rare breed and might present a challenge to find. They are calm and not outgoing in comparison to other spaniels. If left alone for long periods of time they have a tendency to howl or bay. They are great with children and cats and make a very devoted companion. Both sexes will be 15-16 inches in height and weigh 40-44 pounds. They will to fine in an apartment or with a small yard. The Sussex loves a good game of retrieve and being in the outdoors. Their medium-length coat should be brushed regularly.
