Known as the St. Bernard of the waters, the Newfoundland is an outstanding water rescue dog. This dog is calm, gentle and loyal and has a very sweet temperament. They will become very attached and devoted to their owners. This large dog will make a good family dog, but should be watched around smaller children because of their size. Males will be 27-29 inches and weigh around 130-150 pounds. Females will stand 25-27 inches and weigh between 100-120 pounds.

They can do okay in an apartment as long as they have regular opportunities to run or swim. Due to their heavy thick coat they will be sensitive to the heat. Daily brushing of the coat is very important. They will shed twice a year, the spring and the fall. The heaviest time will be in the spring.
