Ibizan Hound
Want to see your dog here? |
Named after the island of Ibiza , this breed was used to chase game on the island. They are quiet, playful and good with children. If there are small animals, rabbits or mice, in the home this might not be a good dog for you. Since they were bred to hunt these animals the dog might kill them. They love their families and view them as its pack. A large backyard with a high fence is perfect for this dog. They need daily exercise, which should contain a brisk walk or run. As long as those needs are met an apartment would be okay for the dog, though not recommended. There are three types of Ibizan: longhaired, wiry-haired and smooth-haired. All just need occasional brushing. Males and females will be around 22-29 inches and weigh between 42-55 pounds.

The Irish Setter is energetic, affectionate and intelligent. They get along well with children and they are easily housebroken. They don’t have any guard dog instincts, just hunting instincts. They need a large open yard to run in, an apartment is not for this dog. A long run or walk daily is needed; if this dog doesn’t receive that they might become difficult to manage. The medium-length coat should be brushed daily. They tend to be average shedders. Males will stand 26-28 inches and weigh between 65-75 pounds. Females will stand 24-26 inches and weigh between 55-65 pounds.

Irish Terrier
Want to see your dog here? |
This terrier, from Country Cork, Ireland, might be one of the oldest breeds of terriers. The Irish Terrier was bred to be a hunter or exterminator of water rats, otter and den animals. Today, however, you will find them as a loyal family companion. They are high-spirited and sometimes referred to as “daredevils.” This terrier loves to play hard and is great with active children. This dog should always be kept on a leash when out for a walk. They will do fine in an apartment or a small yard. Exercise needs to be daily, a walk or jog will be good. Their coat rarely sheds, but should be brushed regularly. Males and females will stand around 18 inches and weigh 25-27 pounds.

This dog drools and slobbers. They are active and enjoy the outdoors. An apartment or small yard is not for this dog. Being a hunting dog, they need space to run. Exercise needs to be daily if a large yard is not possible. A run or swim would be great. Their coat tends to mat, professional grooming is recommended. They shed little to no hair. Both sexes will be 20-23 inches and weigh between 45-65 pounds.

Italian Greyhound
Want to see your dog here? |
The Italian Greyhound is a very small dog. Standing 12-15 inches and weighing between 6-10 pounds. They are gentle, affectionate and will become very attached to their owners. They are high strung and should be handled gently. They do well with children but have been known to snap when frightened. Because of their size they are sensitive to cold, a sweater is suggested during the winter months. They will do well in an apartment or a home with no yard. Playtime or a walk is sufficient exercise. This is the easiest dog to groom. The silky short coat just needs to be rubbed down with a towel and bathe only when needed.
