There are three types of Dachshund: normal, miniature and dwarf. The normal has short hair, requires minimal brushing and is 14-18 inches in height and weighs 20 pounds for both the male and female. The miniature has wiry hair that needs to be professionally groomed around twice a year. Both sexes will stand up to 14 inches in height and weigh up to 9 pounds. The dwarf has a long hair coat and needs daily brushing. They can be up to 12 inches in height and weigh about 8 pounds.

This bred can gain weight quickly if exercise is not regular. A walk or free play is great exercise for them. They make great pets for apartments and will do fine without a backyard. However, if you do have a yard be warned, they love to dig. They are affectionate, playful and devoted to their family. They are barkers, which for their size can be quite loud.

This breed has a ton of energy. Bred to run along side a horse drawn carriage they will not do well in a home that cannot provide lots of physical activity. They are very loyal and need lots of attention and companionship, without it they can become depressed. They make a great indoor pet and play well with children, although he can be bit rambunctious for toddlers.

They shed constantly even with daily brushing, but shed really badly twice a year. They can live in an apartment or a home with a small yard as long as they are taken for a brisk walk or jog through out the day. A home with a larger yard for them to run in is ideal. Males can be 22-24 inches in height. The females are 20-22 inches and both will weigh around 55 pounds.
