Bred for hunting, protecting livestock and guarding a home this breed was brought to America in 1973 to save its life. They were highly used in dog fighting because of their wrinkled coat, other dogs couldn’t get a hold of him or grab onto him. Since being bought over to the states the AKC now has over 70,000 registered as foundation stock with them.

They are very clean dogs and have been known to housebreak themselves. Their coat is shorthair and should be brushed regularly but never trimmed since it doesn’t have an undercoat. They are great indoor pets that will do well in an apartment or home with no backyard. Exercise should be daily, but because of their padded head they can be sensitive to the heat, so make sure they have plenty of water during playtime or while exercising them. Known for its blue-black tongue and almost straight hind legs this is a very well mannered and protective dog. In China they were bred to pull carts and be a guard dog. However, their flesh was eaten and their fur was sold at market. With this in mind the Chow can be a detached and introverted dog. This is not to say they wouldn’t make a good family pet, but owners need to be cautious with small children in the home.

They have a long coat that needs regular brushing. Considered seasonal heavy shedders, they require extra care when shedding their undercoat. They have a tendency to be lazy, but regular exercise will keep them in shape. As long as they are exercised daily they will do fine in an apartment. Males and females will stand 18-22 inches in height and weigh 45-70 pounds.
